1. JOURNALISM
The course is designed for those who wish to work or are employed in mass media environment. The one-year course stresses on acquisition of all relevant information pertaining to mass media Knowledge, skills and attitudes. The course objectives and contents ensure that the students perform effectively at the fast growing Information Technology Sector. The pre-requisite is that students will be familiar with information Technology department of an organization and its Functions. However, students who have the commensurate computer experience and interest can undertake the course.
The course aims to produce graduates with practical skills and understanding of the information requirements of Industry. The students will be provided with knowledge and skill necessary to design,
build, integrate and support the Information Technology (IT) Industry or achieve-self-employment in IT and consultancy.

THE ADVANCED DIPLOMA IN JOURNALISM

Programme Objectives

To provide prospective students of the Journalism and Media Industries with a body of relevant and current knowledge which will:

  1. Increase and broaden their employment opportunities within the industries
  2. Provide them with an extensive theoretical and practical knowledge base on which to build
    their careers and enable them to progress to higher levels of the Journalism and Media Industries
  3. Increase and broaden their understanding of contemporary multi-platform journalism skills, and their awareness of the emerging digital media landscape and the new opportunities which are becoming available.
    The ICM Diploma in Journalism is also suitable for working journalists, who wish to broaden their skills and knowledge base, and who require appropriate qualifications for career advancement or promotion purposes.

An ICM Diploma in Journalism (Part 1 and 2) or its equivalent

DIPLOMA IN JOURNALISM AND MEDIA STUDIES

WHY STUDY JOURNALISM

The course aims at offering the necessary skills and knowledge in both, electronic and print media and
enhance effective communications and corporate relations. It is a 2 Year course.

Course Objectives

Graduates of diploma in Journalism and Media Studies are expected to work as journalists in any print/electronic media house/freelance writers & photographers and in any organization in communication and corporate relations departments.

 

They should be able to: –

  1. Carry out research
  2. Communicate effectively
  3. Analyze data
  4. Gather and disseminate information
  5. Edit
  6. Translate texts
  7. Do photography/video

Course content

Recommended Candidates

  1. A candidate must have obtained a mean grade of C- (Minus) in the 8-4-4 system of education or its equivalent with a minimum of C- (Minus) in Both English and Kiswahili.
  2. Those with a certificate from Eldoret Aviation Training Institute or any other recognized institution on the same course.
  3. Those with experience from a recognized media stations and have slightly lower grades will be considered.

Attachment placements

Attachment placements are available and limited to students who uphold exemplary performance, high level of discipline and are forward looking. This will provide them with the opportunity to apply the theoretical knowledge, and skills learnt in class and give them the opportunity to gain hands-on experience at the same time exposing them to the world of work and responsibility. The Institute
facilitates for attachment slots for all students and ensures that all are assessed.

Duration

2 years – (6 term) (1 term = 3 months) at least 15 hours per week.

Possible Career Titles


Successful graduates can work as journalists, editors, scriptwriters, translators, and News Director, newscaster, News writers, television presenters, continuity announcers, and talk-show hosts, disc jockeys, film/tape librarian, advertising sale executive, Public Relation Officers.
